Emmaus North East is the delivery lead for SHAP Adults in County Durham which is a specialised service aimed at supporting those experiencing homelessness within the County Durham area. It focuses on providing tailored interventions that help people access safe accommodation, address underlying issues contributing to homelessness, and build pathways to independence. The project includes two community homes and a number of disbursed properties with localities in Bishop Auckland, Tow Law and Spennymoor.

The counselling service will play a crucial role in helping residents known as companions address deeply rooted emotional and psychological challenges stemming from adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), domestic abuse, homelessness, and other traumas.

This service aims to complement the practical support provided through SHAP, ensuring a holistic approach to care. Through addressing both immediate needs and long-term psychological recovery, the programme seeks to empower companions to stabilise and thrive. The service will work closely with staff at Emmaus North East and a trauma informed social worker at Durham County Council.
