People with experience of homelessness have driven home their views of what a brighter future in the North East could look like at a powerful forum of leading local organisations.

Emmaus North East was invited to host the event by the investment and grant-making charity, Community Foundation, which is supported by Newcastle Building Society.

The ‘On The Table’ meetings serve as an invitation to join a conversation about addressing the North East’s challenges and opportunities, informed by Community Foundation’s reports, which draw on statistics, research, and local knowledge to highlight how philanthropy can make the most difference to the region’s people and places.

We were joined by a range of attendees from organisations such as the North East Chamber of Commerce, South Tyneside Council, Tyne and Wear Fire Services, young people’s support charity The King’s Trust, food insecurity, homelessness, and community wellbeing charity Hospitality and Hope, and TEDCO North East business support.

At the meeting, some of our companions were able to share their experiences of homelessness and give their views to help drive forward change.

Gav, 47, is one of 17 companions currently being supported us. Gav, said:

“I found the session a great insight into what people think are the most important issues and what we should focus on addressing. Overall, I found the experience really interesting and useful.”

The event sparked thought-provoking discussions, addressing issues such as education, the economy, and community. The general consensus was that, while there is much to be done, the North East has a fantastic sense of community.

Ruth Parker, Chief Executive of Emmaus North East, said:

“Hosting the On the Table event in partnership with the Community Foundation was a significant moment for Emmaus North East. It allowed us to bring together a diverse group of voices, including our companions who shared lived experiences, to discuss the challenges and opportunities in our region. These conversations are vital in driving meaningful change, and we are proud to play a part in shaping the future of the North East by fostering collaboration and amplifying voices from all walks of life.”

As we celebrate our 15th anniversary this year, we remain steadfast in our commitment to supporting people out of homelessness and driving forward positive change.
