As 2024 draws to a close, Emmaus North East reflects on a year marked by growth, impact, and inspiration. From launching new life-changing initiatives to being recognised for excellence, our community has achieved remarkable milestones. Here’s a look back at some of the standout moments from this incredible year.

February: Spreading Kindness Across Newcastle

In February, we celebrated the Emmaus UK campaign on kindness by distributing care packages to rough sleepers on the streets of Newcastle. This initiative was a demonstration of kindness and support for those in need, reflecting our commitment to addressing homelessness and supporting vulnerable individuals in our community.

March: Launch of the Revive and Thrive Project

One of the most significant moments of 2024 was the launch of the Revive and Thrive project, a transformative initiative aimed at supporting survivors of domestic abuse. This women-only accommodation facility offers a safe haven for women who have experienced domestic violence and homelessness. The project provides a secure and supportive environment where women can begin to rebuild their lives, fostering a sense of empowerment and hope for the future.

April: Building a brighter future with “Where There’s a Will”

In April, Emmaus North East unveiled “Where There’s a Will,” a project dedicated to providing individuals with essential tools for personal and professional growth. At the heart of this initiative is the development of a state-of-the-art training room called ‘The Holistic Hub.’ This space is designed to meet the diverse needs of companions, volunteers, and community members. Made possible through funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund via South Tyneside Council, The Holistic Hub is set to become a vital resource for education, training, and holistic support.

May: The reopening of Lucie’s Loft

In May, we proudly reopened our second-hand shop in Low Fell, now reimagined as Lucie’s Loft. This refreshed retail space offers a warm, welcoming environment where shoppers can find unique, pre-loved treasures. The mini makeover has not only enhanced the shopping experience but also provided an additional source of revenue to support our vital community projects.

July: Nominated at the Love South Tyneside Awards

Emmaus North East was thrilled to be recognised with a nomination at the Love South Tyneside Awards in July. This acknowledgment highlighted our ongoing commitment to community engagement, social impact, and support for vulnerable people across the region.

August: Achieving Bronze Accreditation from Investors in the Environment

Our efforts to prioritise sustainability were celebrated in August as Emmaus North East earned Bronze Accreditation from Investors in the Environment. This recognition reflects our commitment to adopting eco-friendly practices, reducing waste, and operating in a more environmentally responsible way.

September: A Month of Milestones

September was an extraordinary month for Emmaus North East, packed with achievements that showcased the strength and determination of our community.

  • Partnership with Anxious Minds: We proudly partnered with Anxious Minds to offer essential counselling support, thanks to funding from Newcastle Building Society. This collaboration addresses the mental health needs of companions and community members, ensuring they have access to professional care.
  • Tony’s Great North Run Triumph: Our inspirational companion, Tony, crossed the finish line at the Great North Run. His participation was more than just a race—it was a testament to his perseverance and dedication. Tony’s efforts raised both funds and awareness for Emmaus North East, and we couldn’t be prouder of his achievement.
  • Bronze Award from the Armed Forces Covenant: We were honoured to receive Bronze status from the Armed Forces Covenant, recognising our commitment to supporting veterans and those currently serving in the military.
  • Outstanding Social Enterprise Award: One of the most memorable highlights of the year was being named “Outstanding Social Enterprise” at the North East Charity Awards. This prestigious award celebrated our ongoing efforts to create lasting social impact.

October: Celebrating World Homeless Day with community impact

On World Homeless Day in October, we reflected on the incredible progress of our community. Over the past year, Emmaus North East welcomed 51 formerly homeless people into our community. Out of these, 24 individuals successfully moved on to live independently, while 4 secured meaningful employment. These achievements underscore the transformative power of our support system and the resilience of our companions.

November: Recognition for sustainability and leadership

  • National Award Win for Sustainability: Our commitment to sustainability was recognised on a national scale when Emmaus North East was shortlisted and ultimately won a national award for our eco-friendly efforts. This win reinforces our pledge to operate in a way that benefits both people and the planet.
  • Hosting the ‘On the Table’ Event: In November, we became the first charity to host the ‘On the Table’ event on behalf of the Community Foundation. This initiative encourages meaningful discussions on the North East’s challenges and opportunities. With input from Community Foundation reports, ‘On the Table’ highlighted how philanthropy can create a significant positive impact on the region’s people and places.

Looking Ahead to 2025

As we close out 2024, we’re filled with gratitude for the support of our companions, volunteers, donors, and community partners. Each achievement represents a step forward in our mission to combat homelessness, promote sustainable living, and encourage personal growth. We’re excited to see what 2025 will bring, and we remain committed to creating lasting change for those in need.

Thank you for being part of our journey.
