People currently being supported by Emmaus Norfolk & Waveney hope to bring a splash of joy and colour to elderly and vulnerable households currently isolating due to the coronavirus outbreak through their recently launched garden project.

Those living at Emmaus have all either experienced homelessness or social exclusion. They are currently planting seeds in hanging baskets and pot plants, as well as producing a range of vegetables to drop on South Norfolk doorsteps to brighten the day for people unable to leave their homes.

The charity, which supports 23 people, normally sells second-hand furniture, household goods and much more at its Ditchingham site and Bungay shop. Both Emmaus shops are temporarily closed to the public following government advice, meaning residents no longer have work to fill their days.

Commenting on why the charity has launched this project, Emmaus Norfolk & Waveney Chief Executive, Cecile Roberts, said:

“Meaningful work is an important part of the support we offer to people who are overcoming homelessness and it is often key to helping build their confidence, self-esteem and dignity. Even though our shops are temporarily closed due to the coronavirus outbreak, the support we provide as charity to our residents continues.

“Residents have chosen several projects to embark on to stay busy and help the local community, with growing plants and produce for the elderly and vulnerable being one of them. If any businesses or individuals would like to help this project, then we are gratefully accepting donations of plants, seeds, pots and gardening equipment and can arrange a non-contact pick up.”

Emmaus generates the funding needed to support residents through its social enterprises. With retail operations closed, Emmaus is losing vital funding and is accepting monetary donations through its online appeal. All donations will help to ensure the charity’s vital work continues.
