Our social enterprise activity is centred around the large Emmaus Mossley Secondhand Superstore where we collect, process and sell a wide range of donated items. Our Secondhand Superstore generates the majority of funding that maintains our community and provides valuable work experience to the people we support.

Emmaus companions and local volunteers help to run all aspects of our Secondhand Superstore, providing great value items and services to our local community. We have our own on-site workshops where donated goods are repaired, refurbished, tested, upcycled or upholstered. Through our social enterprise, companions have the opportunity contribute, to learn and develop a variety of skills, and gain work experience.

Within our Secondhand Superstore, we also have Lucie’s Café serving a range of drinks, cakes and food. On the menu we always have freshly made ‘soup of the day’ and many visitors say we do the best toasted sandwiches around. Our café is a great place to relax, meet with friends and enjoy drinks, cakes and other light bites.

Social impact

Social impact

For every £1 spent with Emmaus there is an £11 social, economic and environmental return on investment.

This was the finding of a social return on investment study carried out on behalf of Emmaus. The research showed that we make a significant impact, with savings to the healthcare system, a reduction in crime and re-offending as well as savings to the benefits bill.
