CLOSING DATE: Ongoing LOCATION: Emmaus Mossley TYPE: Trustee

Emmaus Mossley is seeking to appoint a new Chair to the Board of Trustees. This is an exciting and important time for our charity as we work to help more people out of homelessness and poverty as part of an ambitious strategy.

Emmaus Mossley is a well-established charity, achieving our core aims and delivering impact with embedded values and good governance structures already in place. Joining the Emmaus Mossley Board of Trustees at this time is a rewarding and fulfilling opportunity, especially as we look forward to celebrate our 30th anniversary in 2027.

We are seeking to recruit someone in early 2025 who then will work alongside our current Chair as part of a planned handover period. The newly appointed Chair would then commence the role solely from September 2025 onwards.

About Emmaus Mossley

Emmaus Mossley is a dynamic charity that provides a home, tailored support, training and work opportunities to people who have experienced homelessness. We go beyond just offering a bed for the night; Emmaus provides people with longer-term support, stability, opportunities for personal development, and a strong sense of community.

Emmaus Mossley is an independent local charity that is governed by a board of trustees who all live, work or are invested in the improvement of Tameside, Oldham and its surrounding communities. Whilst our work is focused locally, we are also part of a much wider Emmaus movement.

About the role

An effective Chair provides leadership and management to the Board of Trustees, enabling them to fulfil their responsibilities for the overall governance and strategic direction of the charity. The Chair plays an integral role in ensuring that appropriate decisions are correctly made, including developing Emmaus Mossley’s aims, objectives and goals, in accordance with the highest standards of governance, legal obligations and regulatory guidelines.

As Chair, you should lead trustee discussions in a manner that maintains a focus on the overall objectives of Emmaus Mossley and the responsibilities it carries in relation to companions, staff, volunteers and the local community. The Chair will also have an appreciation of the wider role of Emmaus Mossley, as an active member and participant within the Emmaus movement, at regional, national and international levels. The Chair will recognise and support the central importance of solidarity as a guiding principle of Emmaus.

The Chair will set the conditions for the overall board and the individual effectiveness of trustees. As Chair, you will also set clear expectations concerning Emmaus Mossley’s culture, values and behaviour, leading the board in ensuring that these are embedded, celebrated and encouraged.

The Chair works in partnership with the Chief Executive Officer to ensure that trustee decisions are acted upon and the charity is managed effectively. The Chair should fully understand the difference between the role the Board of Trustees plays in governance, and that of the CEO and staff team in applying that strategy to the day-to-day operations of the charity.
