Second-hand fashion took centre-stage at Thread Revolution – the latest themed charity event within the Emmaus Mossley Secondhand Superstore.
On Thursday 9 October, more than 100 guests attended Emmaus to experience a unique fashion show, combining sustainable wares with a protest against fast fashion. Our Secondhand Superstore was transformed for the event with stages, placards and rails of quality pre-loved clothing unveiled throughout the evening.
Molly Ridgway, Retail Assistant at Emmaus Mossley and one of the organisers of the event, said: “Thread Revolution was a fantastic opportunity to showcase the creativity secondhand shopping can offer. It’s increasingly becoming more important that we celebrate pre-loved fashion as opposed to buying fast-fashion due to the current climate crisis. Instead of buying brand new, we should appreciate and offer new life to something that already has a story to tell.”
The Thread Revolution event featured volunteer models of all ages, taking to the stage to showcase pre-loved garments from different collections. The evening also included a live DJ, mocktails and a sale of the charity’s finest clothes, shoes and accessories.
Gary, a resident at Emmaus Mossley and one of the models at the event, said: “The Thread Revolution event was so different because the supporters who attended on the night didn’t really know what to expect. It wasn’t our usual catwalk event – we had models coming from all directions with banners protesting fast-fashion.”
“Everyone had a good laugh, but we also got an important message across, which is that fast-fashion is not the way to go – the companies behind these clothes care about profit, not the planet. We should always try to shop pre-loved where we can.”
Emmaus Mossley supports people who have experienced homelessness by providing them with a home, companionship, tailored support and work opportunities. As well as raising awareness of sustainable fashion, the event raised vital funds for our charity and the support given to help people move on from homelessness.
Our next themed charity event will be a Community Christmas Celebration taking place on Saturday 15 November. This festive-themed event will include live music, fun activities, tasty food, a visit from Santa and Christmas charity shopping.
