On Monday 20 May, Boundary Park played host to the charity game between staff and special guests of Oldham Athletic and community members and friends from Emmaus Mossley. More than 100 supporters turned out to support the teams on a sunny Monday evening, raising £350 for Emmaus Mossley.
Players taking part included former Oldham Athletic Manager Pete Wild, former Manchester United player Daniel Nardiello, journalist Tom McDermott and local actor Ayden Callaghan. The game finished 5-5 at full time and the Oldham Athletic XI secured the win in a penalty shoot-out.
Mark Sheridan, Oldham Athletic Club Secretary, said: “It was wonderful to have Emmaus Mossley at Boundary Park for the charity fixture. The work they do to tackle homelessness in the local area should be commended more and as a club we were more than to help in raising awareness and much need funds. We have a good relationship with Emmaus Mossley and we will continue to work with them in years to come.”
The match was supported by Oldham Athletic Community Trust as part of the club’s ongoing efforts to assist communities and groups in the surrounding area. The Emmaus team, included Pete Wild and local PCSO Karl Lisic, along with formerly homeless people who are now supported by the charity.
Darren, companion of Emmaus Mossley and team captain, said: “It was a huge honour to take part in the match at Boundary Park and to score two penalties. I’d like to give a huge thanks to all who took part, those who helped to organise the event and everyone who attended to show their support.
“Our journey as an Emmaus football team has been fantastic and I’d like to give thanks to Harry, our Community Leader, for making the journey happen.”
With the support of Oldham Athletic FC and Mossley AFC, community members from Emmaus Mossley have been inspired to increase their participation in football, improving their health, wellbeing and teamwork skills. The Emmaus team are planning to take part in a 5-a-side tournament in June and another charity football match in September.
