In a remarkable display of solidarity and determination, a team of people supported by Emmaus Merseyside recently completed a hike up Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) to raise funds for Zoe’s Place Baby Hospice in Liverpool.
Emmaus Merseyside is an award-winning charity that provides a home, training, work opportunities and individual support to people who have experienced homelessness. On Wednesday 7 August, 11 people supported by our charity – known as Emmaus companions – completed the hike alongside Emmaus Merseyside staff, a trustee and supporters.
Hayley, one of the team who completed the hike, commented: “I found it difficult to get to the top, but I was determined, and it was all worth it for a good cause. On the walk it was nice to see the trains go past and the views were amazing.”
Fellow Emmaus hiker Ashley commented: “I love big walks but it was a gruelling hike to get to the summit and back. Being out and about in the great outdoors is good for your mental health and it was good to do the walk in good company.”
Zoe’s Place Baby Hospice supports babies and infants with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions, and their families, from across the North West region. The hospice is committed to ensuring these children enjoy the best possible quality of life while supporting their families throughout their journey.
The inspiring fundraising challenge completed by Emmaus Merseyside community members has already achieved its goal of raising £1,500 for Zoe’s Place. The funds will go towards an urgent £3.5 million appeal to secure a future in Liverpool for Zoe’s Place by funding a new home for its hospice.
“We are incredibly proud of our companions, staff, and supporters for their dedication and commitment to complete this fundraising challenge,” said Marc Bamber, Chief Operating Officer at Emmaus Merseyside.
“The funds raised will make a real difference to Zoe’s Place Baby Hospice, and we are grateful to everyone who donated and supported this cause. Even in challenging times, our community has shown that everyone can make a difference to the lives of others and together, we can achieve great things.”
Solidarity is central to the ethos of Emmaus, and everyone involved at the charity is encouraged to embrace solidarity to support people in greater need. For the people who complete acts of solidarity, it can also bring many personal benefits to their health, wellbeing, self-esteem and understanding of the wider world.
