Emmaus Merseyside is appealing for volunteers, materials, tools and support to help transform our large community garden in Sefton.
After two recent thefts from the garden’s polytunnels, our gardening team are keen to get their growing season back on track. A team of local volunteers and the formerly homeless people we support have big plans for the site, but require more people, materials and support to realise their ambitions.
Emmaus Merseyside is an award-winning charity that provides a home, training, work opportunities and individual support to people who have experienced homelessness. Next to our community building in Seaforth, our large garden with raised beds and polytunnels is currently undergoing a revamp.
Claire Curtis-Thomas, a member of the team helping to develop the garden, commented: “This opportunity of volunteering has given me a real purpose and something that I’m really grateful for.
“We have a range of opportunities for volunteers and would welcome complete garden novices and those with a bit more experience. In addition, we want to build beautiful displays and would love to work with an artist and a florist to create these.
“For those thinking of becoming a volunteer at Emmaus, you shouldn’t hesitate. You’ll be surrounded by really kind, lovely people and you’ll find volunteering will bring an awful lot to your life. It’s something that’s really rewarding.”
Our exciting community garden plans
The garden currently grows food for use in the Emmaus Merseyside community home and plants which are sold in our charity shops. Future plans include an expansion of the growing space, increased biodiversity, creative workshops and a regular farmer’s market.
Marc Bamber, Chief Operating Officer at Emmaus Merseyside, said: “Despite the two recent break-ins, our gardening team has worked very hard to prepare the site for this year’s growing season, but we need more support to help it reach its full potential.
“It’s a fantastic space that we hope will provide plenty of fresh food and generate an income so we can continue to support people who’ve experienced homelessness.”
Our gardening team hopes to attract more volunteer gardeners to help at the site, as well as a volunteer florist and resident artist. We are also appealing for donations of materials including soil and seeds, clay pots and gardening tools such as hand tools, watering cans and wheelbarrows.
