Later this month, Emmaus Merseyside will be holding two upcycling workshops at the Emmaus community building in Seaforth.
The two 5-hour upcycling workshops will teach people basic furniture repair skills, promote reuse and inspire creativity. The subsidised workshops have been organised by Emmaus Merseyside with help from the Merseyside Recycling & Waste Authority and Veolia Community Fund.
Kelly Archibald, a previous Emmaus upcycling workshop attendee, said: “It was a fabulous day and I gained lots from the workshop. For me, it was a chance to see how old furniture can be transformed in new and imaginative ways. I loved the workshop and love Emmaus too!”
On Friday 20 March, the ‘Upcycling Creative Techniques Workshop’ will cover creative painting techniques, decoupage and image transfer to transform old furniture items. On Saturday 21 March, the ‘Upcycle a Chair Workshop’ will teach attendees creative painting, finishing techniques and basic upholstery skills.
Honora Crisp, Business Manager of Emmaus Merseyside, said: “Our upcoming workshops aim to inspire local residents, giving them the skills and confidence to complete their own upcycling projects. Attendees will be a shown a step by step process to paint and style a piece of furniture to give it a fresh new look. If you’re able to join us you’ll learn new skills, have fun, meet some like-minded people and get the chance to take your creation home.”
Emmaus Merseyside supports formerly homeless people by providing a stable home and meaningful work for as long as they need it. The charity operates social enterprises in Merseyside, taking in and selling donated and refurbished furniture, household goods, bric-a-brac, clothes and vintage pieces.
Places on these workshops are limited and offered on a first come, first served basis. Tickets are available online, priced at £12 per person plus booking free.
