A new programme delivered by Emmaus Merseyside has proved a success by boosting the creativity and wellbeing of Sefton residents.

Emmaus Merseyside’s Wellness Wednesday sessions initially started as a 12-week pilot programme. Due to the success of the weekly activities and demand from people taking part, we have committed to extending the project in December and beyond.

Mags, an attendee from Bootle, said: “I really enjoy coming to the Wellness Wednesday. Everyone is warm, friendly and welcoming. I enjoy having the opportunity to engage in new crafts and having some time to relax and chat with everyone.”

Emmaus Merseyside is an award-winning charity that provides a home, tailored support, training and work opportunities to people who have experienced homelessness. The Wednesday Wellness sessions give our residents a chance to take part in creative sessions alongside members of the local community.

Emmaus resident Ben has attended all sessions and also led some of the activities too. Ben added: “My favourite session has been scrapbooking – it’s fun! The group have all been so lovely and taught me artsy stuff that I’d never tried before.

“My scrapbook is like a little piece of my personality. I’ve painted anime water colours and drawn oil pastel Kanye West covers. At first it felt a little stupid, a bit girly, but I’m actually genuinely loving it.”

Boosting creativity and wellbeing

The free Wellness Wednesday sessions take place in The Hub & Coffee Shop in the grounds of our community garden in Seaforth. Typically, 12 to 15 people attend each week, taking part in a different themed creative or craft activity.

Talia Johnson, Hospitality & Catering Manager at Emmaus Merseyside, said: “What started as a project to bring the community together within our Hub & Coffee Shop has grown beyond my expectations. I’m so happy that the project has been so successful, most importantly, the improved health and wellbeing of the people who have taken part.

“We’re all really excited for the extra festive-themed sessions this year and have already started planning for the Wellness Wednesday activities in early 2026. Everyone is welcome and we’re keen to encourage more people to join us, get creative and meet new people as part of our group.”
