We can resell many items in our Emporium charity shop, including furniture, fridges, freezers, tumble dryers, homeware and bric-a-brac, music, books, games, craft supplies, clothing and accessories, as long as they are in good, re-sellable condition.

Items we can’t accept…

For safety reasons

  • Upholstered donated furniture without a fire label (unless pre-1950s)
  • Furniture with unsafe missing parts or damage
  • Furniture with glass that does not have a kite mark or tempered glass.
  • Candles without instructions and safety notice
  • Duvets and pillows (unless in original packaging)
  • Roller or venetian blinds (unless in original packaging with safety instructions included)
  • Soiled or dirty mattresses

Safety equipment

  • Safety helmets: crash, cycle, riding hats
  • Climbing equipment
  • Buoyancy aids, life jackets and inflatable dinghies
  • Mobility items e.g., wheelchairs, walkers, bath aids

Sports equipment

We can sell non-electrical sports equipment if it is new and comes with instructions. Many items can cause damage if they are not in perfect working order or used correctly. We’re not able to test large electrical equipment for safety. We’re not able to accept…

Electrical items

We can test and sell many electrical items. However, for safety reasons we can’t accept the items listed below. We don’t have the facilities to ensure that laptops, computers, and tablets are wiped of personal data. We also can’t sell power tools as we can’t guarantee that all parts are working and safe to use. We’re not able to accept…

  • Cookers
  • Washing machines
  • Dish washers
  • Laptops, personal computers, and tablets
  • Electric blankets
  • Sunbeds and tanning equipment
  • Personal hygiene items such as shavers and foot spas
  • Power tools
  • Mobile phones
  • E-readers

Media

We can sell 18-rated items, but it’s illegal to sell age-restricted goods to anyone below the specified age. This includes computer games with age ratings based on content. We may ask for ID when you purchase age-restricted media.

We can’t accept home-recorded DVDs or VHS tapes.

Children’s items

We are unable to sell items which may be unsafe for children:

  • Cot bumpers, cot mattresses, pram mattresses
  • Children’s pillows
  • Cribs, cradles, and reclined cradles
  • Table mounted chairs.
  • Playpens, baby baths, baby door bouncers, baby walkers
  • Inflatable armbands and rings worn as floatation aids
  • Toys without a CE mark
  • Skateboards or roller skates
  • Clothing with hood cords
  • Nightwear and fancy-dress items not labelled as fire resistant
  • Car seats and booster seats
  • Child seats for cycles

Sharps/weapons

We can’t sell dangerous items for legal and safety reasons. You can dispose of sharps or weapons via your local police station. We’re not able to accept…

  • Sharp knives (excludes cutlery)
  • Swords
  • Crossbows or catapults
  • Guns or realistic replica toy guns
  • Ammunition
  • Sharp gardening tools
  • Other weapons

Other

  • Chemical items
  • Medications
  • Smoking related items
  • Hot water bottles
  • Gas or petrol appliances
  • Unsealed cosmetics and toiletries
  • Food or perishables
  • Counterfeit items
  • Military uniforms with names or company branded uniforms.
  • Motor vehicles or car parts
  • Grossly offensive and/or discriminatory material

Ivory and fur

We do not accept or sell donations of ivory or real fur.
