Emmaus Hertfordshire is cycling from dawn ‘til dusk to raise funds for two digital classrooms for tribal children in India and to support our work to end homelessness here at home.

Our ‘dawn ‘til dusk cycle challenge’ is taking place on Sunday 12th October when a team of companions and staff will be in the saddle from 7.30am to 6pm, looking to cover as many miles as possible in and around St Albans. We’d love people to support us by either cycling with us or donating!

Participants can either complete a 10-mile circuit on the roads and cycle paths of the city, beginning from our community in Hill End, St Albans, or clock up the mileage on static bikes in the community.

The funding required for the smart classes project is £3000, and friends, family, partners, supporters and volunteers are all very welcome to join us and use pedal-power to achieve the target!

Life-changing initiative

All funds raised will go towards funding the development and launch of two ‘smart classes’ to provide a digital education for tribal children attending a child development centre in Tamil Nadu, India.

This life-changing initiative by the Emmaus Asia Society will also support children attending a neighbouring school in Killai, Tamil Nadu. Any additional funds raised over our target will be used to support the work we do to help end homelessness in Hertfordshire.

Our support is part of our ongoing solidarity work to help other people and projects in need. Helping others not only benefits the people themselves but has a positive impact on our companions by giving them a sense of purpose and fulfilment and increasing their self-esteem during their recovery from homelessness.

“Equip young people with the skills they need”

Our Chief Executive Officer, Duncan Lewis said: “The children in this very rural part of India do not have the luxury of having access to computers, the world-wide web, or digital technology, limiting their future life opportunities and pathways in an increasingly digital world.

“This wonderful initiative by our counterparts in the Emmaus Asia Society will equip young people with the skills they need to access digital technology, opening up a whole new world of benefits, both for their education, personal development and future life opportunities.

“By cycling as many miles as we can as a team, we hope to cover at least 310 miles, which is the equivalent of riding from our community in St Albans to the Emmaus International offices in Montreuil, Paris, the heartbeat of our charity’s global work.”

if you’d like to join us on the day for a lap or several of the 10-mile circuit or a spell in the static bike, then please fill out the entry form below.

Donations are very welcome and can be made via our JustGiving campaign page.
