I lived on my own from the age of 16. After a spell of homelessness, I lived in hostels and local authority accommodation, so I’ve always wanted to help people get back to independent living as I’ve been through that journey myself.
Knowing that Emmaus provides support for mental health, training and teaches people new skills – that is what I love about my job as a support worker. It’s great being able to really support people to better themselves and find that self-worth and a purpose. Just getting companions (the people we support) back into society after homelessness and feeling good about themselves – that is what I really love about my role.
I think Emmaus is an incredible organisation and I feel really blessed to work here. I’d never heard of a charity like this that gives people a home and provides people who have experienced homelessness the support and guidance they need to get back on their feet. This could be anything from driving lessons to training courses, to work experience and helping them learn life skills, all of it is just fantastic.
Being able to help so many different personalities is not boring in the slightest – the mix and range of things you are doing keeps the job so interesting and varied. From my interview to my start date in January 2025 and to now, it feels like I’ve always been here, it’s such a lovely community and I’ve fitted right in. I feel very much at home, everyone’s been amazing.
