To celebrate World Photography Day 2021, our companions have been busy snapping shots of our community to give you a little insight into what a typical day is like at Emmaus Hastings & Rother.

Every morning after breakfast, we hold a team meeting with all of our companions and staff, where we decide the priorities for that day and decide who is going to take on which jobs. Then, we’re off to work – whether that’s at our Secondhand Superstore in St Leonards-on-Sea or at our shop in Bexhill.

Some of the duties involve restocking shelves, accepting donated goods, restoring and upcycling items ready for resale, customer deliveries and preparing meals. Having a purpose helps to rebuild our companions’ confidence and self-esteem, and through the work they do, they have the opportunity to train and learn new skills for future employment.

Companion Bongo had been homeless on and off since he was 17, but he moved into Emmaus Hastings & Rother four years ago and hasn’t looked back. He says: “Emmaus is a lovely charity. It works for people and it’s good for the community. My job is on the shop floor in sales. I love talking to the customers. They treat me well and we often have a laugh together. Our customers are amazing, without them Emmaus just wouldn’t get the support it needs.”
