This month, we will be supporting Oxfam’s Secondhand September campaign. An initiative which encourages shoppers to buy secondhand items only for 30 days throughout September.
Shopping secondhand at Emmaus Hastings & Rother means you’ll not only be helping people overcome homelessness, but you’ll also be helping to protect the planet by rebelling against fast fashion and reducing waste.
Every penny you spend at our Secondhand Superstore and Bexhill shop goes back into our community, funding a home, meaningful work, training, food and living expenses for people who have experienced homelessness, like Alistair.
Alistair found a home at Emmaus Hastings & Rother two years ago, after spending months of his life living on the streets of London. He says: “Being at Emmaus really helps me. It’s my home. It’s stability. It’s making me realise what I want out of life and is helping me to achieve my dreams. I love it here.
“My job in the community is to sort through donations. I’m also working e-waste into our social enterprises, so instead of throwing unusable electrical things away, I strip the stuff out, recycle the plastic or metal, then sell the circuit board. It’s another way to reduce waste.”
