Emmaus Hampshire is growing and now supports 40 Companions at the community in Bar End Rd, Winchester and operates three furniture shops. We are looking for more volunteers who can give 4 hours a week or more of their time and expertise. Of particular interest would be people with experience in home retail to support the shop managers, furniture restorers to help in the new Repair Shop, van drivers, cake bakers and café staff.  Our volunteers have a can-do attitude, are happy working alongside formerly homeless Companions, and are fit and energetic.

Driver

If you have a full driving license, fancy being at the wheel of a Luton van and like meeting people, give driving a go. We are looking for drivers to collect donations and deliver furniture bought in our shops.

Volunteer drivers must have a clean full car driving license. You would work alongside Companions driving the Luton vans delivering and collecting furniture from customers and generous local donors throughout Hampshire. You may like to help the Companions lift and shift furniture, but this isn’t essential.

Retail Advisor

Are you looking for retail or hospitality experience? If you can spare a few hours a week, we need people to help run the tills, advise on merchandising and serve our customers in the shops and café.

Our retail volunteers help the Companions and staff manage our 3 shops. You would advise on how to display items, what sells and what doesn’t, when to run special discounts and shopper psychology.  You may also enjoy sorting incoming donations.

Restorer and Upcycler

We are looking for chippies – not the foody kind this time, but anyone who is handy with a sander, knows how to strip paint, or how to revamp some of the much loved items that are donated to Emmaus. Upcycling is huge right now, so we welcome anyone (professional or a DIYer) with fresh ideas on how to make the most of the treasures donated to us.

As an upcycler you would work with Companions restoring furniture in the Repair Shop at Bar End, Winchester. This facility, new in 2021, is fully fitted out with the latest tools and equipment. Volunteers may teach Companions or just work together. Some training is offered.

Café staff

As a café volunteer you would work at the weekend (10-5pm Sat Sun) alongside the Companions in the Green Roof Café at the Winchester shop. You would act as front of house, taking orders, accepting payment and serving food and drinks to café customers.

Baker

If you know how to handle an icing bag and whisk up a good sponge, please do consider baking for our Green Roof Café. We serve home-made cakes baked by volunteers and extremely popular with customers.

As a baker you would join a rota of bakers, who each provide a home-made cake or traybake once a month for sale in the café. Bakes must be decorated and tasty, prepared in a clean, domestic kitchen and delivered to the Green Roof Café at Bar End, Winchester.

Digital Marketer

We need volunteers to liven up our social media presence. If you’re a fan of Facebook or you love a good tweet, then please get in touch, we’d like to hear your ideas, and hopefully put your thumbs to work, spreading the word about our community.

How to apply
