Emmaus Hampshire has officially opened its new Wellbeing Centre, offering a calm and supportive environment where companions can focus on their mental health and personal growth.
The Centre is designed for counselling and small-group sessions and features a lounge area, bathroom, and kitchen. Located within the Emmaus Hampshire community site, it has been described as a sanctuary where companions can relax, reflect, and reconnect.
The Wellbeing Centre has been created to help companions manage the emotional impact of rebuilding their lives, while providing an environment that supports independence and stability.
It is already being well used. Counselling sessions are held twice a week, and companions have begun running their own peer-support groups, where they meet to share experiences and offer encouragement. The kitchen area allows residents to cook meals for visiting family members, giving them the chance to strengthen relationships in a private, homely setting.
The space also supports Emmaus Hampshire’s focus on developing life skills and confidence. For companions who live communally, the opportunity to have quiet, personal time has been transformative. Large windows overlook green spaces, creating a sense of peace and connection with nature.
“When you live alongside so many people, it can be difficult to find time for yourself,” said Community Director Karen. “This centre gives companions a place where they can feel calm, have private conversations, and focus on their wellbeing. It’s a small space with a huge impact.”
The kitchen within the new centre has been named Jo’s Kitchen, in memory of Jo Tanter, a long-standing supporter of Emmaus Hampshire who passed away earlier this year. The dedication plaque was handcrafted by one of the companions, Tim, as a tribute to her kindness and commitment to the community.
Jo’s Kitchen and the Wellbeing Centre as a whole reflect the values at the heart of Emmaus — dignity, hope and community. The facility is expected to play an essential role in our ongoing work to help companions move on from homelessness into independent living.
The opening of the centre follows a year of significant change for Emmaus Hampshire, which continues to adapt its services in response to growing demand and rising costs. Despite those challenges, the completion of the Wellbeing Centre stands as a symbol of the charity’s resilience and belief in the power of community support.
