We were delighted to recently welcome Amin Mansouri, the Counsellor for Health, Labour, and Social Affairs at the French Embassy, and Intern Théo Chevalerias to our community home and charity shop.

The visit marked an important milestone in the relationship between Emmaus and the French Embassy, which has developed significantly over the past year. Embassy staff explored the unique Emmaus model at one of the 29 local communities, gaining valuable insight into the charity’s impactful work.

The Emmaus movement originated in France and, although Emmaus UK is an autonomous charity with its own direction, the Embassy has been interested in learning how Emmaus UK supports people who have experienced homelessness and how the charity’s campaign and lobbying works to change government policy.

King Charles, then Prince of Wales, opened Emmaus Greenwich in 2008. We offer accommodation, support, work opportunities, and training for up to 45 individuals who have experienced homelessness.

The charity also operates outreach services through ‘Solidarity Points’ across South East London, providing furniture aid to those with migration experiences, and essential support to people affected by or at risk of homelessness.

By offering a stable living environment and opportunities to gain new skills through its social enterprises, the charity empowers individuals to rebuild their lives and regain independence.

During their visit on Wednesday, 22 January, Amin and Théo , explored the community hub on Elmley Street, Plumstead. They met several Emmaus residents, known to the organisation as companions, who live and work within the charity’s supportive community. They also toured the charity shop, where companions collaborate to reuse and recycle donated household items and furniture, contributing to the charity’s sustainability efforts.

Reflecting on the visit, Amin Mansouri, the Counsellor for Health, Labour, and Social Affairs at the French Embassy said: “Housing is a matter of dignity in our developed countries. In the continuous fight against homelessness, Emmaus UK is not only providing affordable housing but a whole 360° safe and empowering environment, from practical employment skills to a real sense of belonging in a community. Thanks to the amazing and benevolent commitment of Emmaus UK’s team, especially in Greenwich.”

Sofia Barbosa, Chief Executive of Emmaus Greenwich, said: “We are grateful to Amin the Counsellor for Health, Labour, and Social Affairs at the French Embassy, and his colleague Theo for taking the time to visit Emmaus Greenwich and witnessing the impactful work we do in supporting people as they transition out of homelessness.

“Amin and Theo engaged with both companions and staff, toured our community, and visited the charity shop where our companions actively contribute. It was a pleasure to welcome them both to Emmaus Greenwich, and this visit marks an important milestone in strengthening the relationship between Emmaus UK and the French Embassy that has been building over the last year.”
