As part of our 30th-anniversary celebrations, we transformed a historic building in Lewisham into a sustainable social enterprise.
Located in the stunning Prudential Building, 187-197 Lewisham High Street, London, the new Emmaus Charity Superstore – Furniture and Fashion offers boutique-style fashion, selling beautiful, preloved clothing, homewares and furniture. All proceeds will help fund vital support for individuals rebuilding their lives after homelessness at our community in Plumstead.
The Grade II-listed Prudential Building dates back to 1908 and was designed by Paul Waterhouse, son of the renowned Victorian architect Alfred Waterhouse, best known for designing London’s Natural History Museum. The red brick and terracotta Gothic Revival style was a defining architectural trend of the late 19th century, making the building a landmark in Lewisham’s history.
Emmaus Greenwich provides a home, tailored support and work opportunities to individuals who have experienced homelessness. The new superstore will offer people supported by the charity valuable skills and retail experience, helping them gain confidence and move forward in their lives.
Statistics from the Government Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs state that £42 million worth of unwanted Christmas presents are sent to landfills each year. Waste Mission claim that 114,000 tonnes of Christmas plastic packaging is sent to landfills instead of being recycled.
Emmaus Greenwich is encouraging shoppers to think ‘Thriftmas’ this year. Whether it’s a pre-loved cookbook for the star baker in your family or a unique upcycled bag, vintage homeware or jewellery, second-hand gifting helps cut waste and ensures a truly one-of-a-kind present for your loved ones.
Simon Thompson, Retail Manager of Emmaus Greenwich, said: “We are thrilled to be adding the new Lewisham store alongside the shops we already have in Plumstead, Poplar and online. Branching out to a new community to continue the work we do in supporting those who have previously experienced homelessness, as well as offering a sustainable social enterprise for the benefit of the local community, is a very fitting way to celebrate our 30th anniversary.”
The Emmaus Greenwich Charity Superstore – Furniture and Fashion is open Tuesday – Saturday 10am to 16.30pm.
