Emmaus Glasgow is part of a global movement working to end homelessness by providing a home, support, training and meaningful work opportunities for people with experience of homelessness.
Our social enterprise involves taking in, reusing and recycling household items, to help generate the vital funding needed to sustain our community home, where we support individuals with experience of homelessness to rebuild their lives through work, training, and companionship.
As we look to strengthen our governance, we are seeking motivated and passionate individuals to join our Board of Trustees and help guide Emmaus Glasgow into the future.
Role Summary
As a trustee, you’ll play a vital role in shaping the strategic direction and ensuring the effective governance of Emmaus Glasgow. Working collaboratively with other board members, staff, and our companions (residents), you’ll support us in achieving our vision of empowering people to overcome homelessness. We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds who can bring fresh perspectives, skills, and ideas.
Key Responsibilities
• Governance: Ensure the charity operates in compliance with its governing document and legal requirements, fostering accountability and transparency.
• Strategy: Help set and review the long-term strategic aims of Emmaus Glasgow, ensuring alignment with our mission to end homelessness.
• Financial Oversight: Review financial statements, budgets, and funding strategies to support financial sustainability and ethical decision-making.
• Advocacy: Act as an ambassador for Emmaus Glasgow, promoting the charity within personal and professional networks to broaden our support and reach.
• Risk Management: Identify and manage potential risks, ensuring policies and systems are in place to safeguard the charity’s resources and reputation.
• Team Support: Support and provide guidance to the CEO and senior management team, fostering a collaborative and effective relationship.
Who We’re Looking For
We’re seeking individuals with one or more of the following backgrounds:
• Social Work / Homelessness Services: Experience in supporting people with complex needs, ideally in a homelessness, addiction, or mental health setting.
• Business Development / Social Enterprise: Skills in business planning, marketing, retail, or social enterprise management to help sustain and grow our charity shops and projects.
• Fundraising / Income Generation: Knowledge of fundraising, grant applications, and partnerships to help secure future funding.
• Finance / Legal / HR: Professional expertise in finance, legal matters, or human resources to provide critical oversight and guidance.
• Lived Experience of Homelessness: We strongly welcome applications from individuals with lived experience, who can bring unique insights and empathy to our work.
Time Commitment
Approximately 6-8 hours per month, including monthly board meetings (in person and online) and occasional events
