What do two and a half Glasgow city buses, four Highland cows and three bells from St Mary’s Cathedral have in common?

These are the equivalent weights of metal, wood, cardboard and paper that Emmaus Glasgow has recycled over the past two years.

Our homelessness charity is celebrating several recycling milestones during Recycle Week this October 14 to 20. We recycled 8.88 metric tonnes of wood waste in five months, 4.38 metric tonnes of cardboard and paper over three months and 29.09 metric tonnes of metal over the last two years.

Our recycling partners

This success is due in part to partnerships with AW Jenkinson Woodwaste Ltd, Highlander International Recycling among others as well as the dedication of the people supported by Emmaus. Our Emmaus Glasgow companions help process donations and reuse these in the charity’s shops on Ellesmere Street in Hamiltonhill and Dumbarton Road in Partick.

Gus Hamilton, Operations and Development Manager, said: “We are proud to have achieved these recycling milestones which will help the city of Glasgow to become cleaner and greener while helping Emmaus raise money to help people build back from homelessness.

“At Emmaus Glasgow, people supported by the charity can help collect unwanted goods, carry out property clearances or support in the charity shops. By providing a tailored package of long-term support, work opportunities and training, people can gain skills and the experience to get back on their feet again.”

Remanufactured paint

Emmaus Glasgow sells preloved furniture and fashion from our two charity shops, recently adding a new line of tins of remanufactured ‘Recolour’ paint in Hamiltonhill.

Emmaus companion, Daniel, helps the charity’s with reuse and recycling. He said: “It’s great to recycle and work with other people to help the environment. Repairing furniture and giving items a second life feels great. I learn new skills and meet lots of other people. These items can be resold for a good price and it is good for the environment.”

If you would like to donate goods to Emmaus Glasgow, you can drop off smaller items directly to the charity’s shops. Or complete a contact form for the charity to get in touch to arrange a free collection service from your home, for larger items such as furniture.
