Emmaus Dover received awards for our charitable work in Kent as finalists for Charity of the Year 2024 in the Kent Charity Awards.
Emmaus companions Mickey and Garry, CEO Debbie Stevenson and trustee Nigel Bodell attended on behalf of our community and received certificates of special recognition at an awards ceremony at the Corn Exchange in Rochester on Thursday 5th September.
Since 1995, Emmaus Dover has provided long-term support, accommodation, and meaningful work opportunities for individuals who have experienced homelessness, poverty, and social exclusion. Today Emmaus Dover provides help for up to 27 people, focusing on personal development, training and work opportunities at the charity’s social enterprises and acts of solidarity within the local community.
Many of the people supported by the charity have faced significant challenges, including mental health issues, substance dependency, and social isolation. By offering a stable home and comprehensive support, Emmaus helps individuals overcome these barriers. In 2023 alone, Emmaus Dover received 79 referrals from various local services and provided over 8,500 days of accommodation.
Debbie Stevenson, Chief Executive Officer at Emmaus Dover, said: “Congratulations to all the charities who were part of the Kent Charity Awards, it was brilliant to attend the awards ceremony and learn more about the fantastic charitable work going on across the county.
“For people stuck in a cycle of homelessness, Emmaus Dover provides the time, space and support they need to take stock of their lives and make positive changes for the future. It is not about giving short term hand-outs; it’s about providing people with the tools and support they need to be able to help themselves. This approach has been proven to produce long-term and sustainable results.
“Being shortlisted for the Kent Charity Awards is a tremendous honour that recognised the hard work and dedication of our companions, volunteers and staff. It was a positive catalyst for further positive impact in the communities we support, and meant a huge amount to us.”
Emmaus Dover plays a crucial role in the Dover District Council’s 2020-2024 Rough Sleeping Strategy. In addition to providing long-term tailored support, Emmaus Dover volunteers carry out weekly soup runs to support people who are rough sleeping with essentials, food and advice.
Partners supporting Emmaus with its mission to help others, include HSBC, which provides budgeting workshops and advice on bank accounts for people with no fixed abode.
Thanks to supporters, Emmaus Dover was able to raise over £1million in its Building a Better Future Project for a new workshop, refurbished warehouse and a modern retail space with new solar panels.
