Charity Abseil
Help us raise £8,000 for a new boiler – please sponsor our Coventry Cathedral Abseil
I first found out about Emmaus Coventry & Warwickshire by searching online.
I’d wanted to help people who find themselves homeless for a long time, but I was only able to do so after moving from full-time to part-time work. When I visited and chatted to the people here, I felt that the approach of Emmaus really aligned with my own values, so I signed up straightaway.
I started volunteering in July 2024 and now help out roughly once a month.
I volunteer at the Emmaus charity shop on Red Lane, taking on different tasks depending on the day. I help restock and sort donations in the backroom, serve customers, move furniture, and keep the shop tidy. Whatever needs doing, I’m happy to get stuck in.
Through my HR and coaching background, I’m used to communicating with a wide range of people. I’ve learned the importance of not judging others and taking time to understand their lived experiences. These skills have been really useful in my role at Emmaus.
One of my favourite aspects of volunteering is meeting new people – from customers and staff to those supported by Emmaus. I enjoy hearing their stories and getting to know their different personalities. If I were only working with other volunteers, I don’t think I’d find it as fulfilling.
Since starting, I’ve gained new perspectives on life and people that I wouldn’t have had otherwise. I’ve also learned practical skills, like operating the till and booking in collections and deliveries. Seeing how the retail team supports both customers and those helped by Emmaus has been really valuable.
Volunteering at Emmaus is a chance to make a difference to people in difficult situations and help them move towards a future they can feel hopeful about. It’s something different from everyday life, and I’d definitely encourage others to get involved.
