A very warm welcome to the first edition of the Emmaus Cornwall newsletter.

Despite these very challenging times, 2021 promises to be an exciting year in the development of our charity as we take significant steps towards delivering our first Emmaus community in Cornwall.

The icy weather of recent weeks has been a stern reminder of the hardships faced by homeless people across our county. We are determined to address this, along with other organisations and agencies in Cornwall who are working to reduce the scourge of crisis and long-term homelessness.

Our aim with this newsletter is to keep you informed of progress and to share ways in which you can support us, whether financially or giving of your time. Emmaus Cornwall is a small charity with big ambitions and we need your help to deliver our priorities and to make a practical difference in the lives of those sleeping on our streets, sofa surfing or who otherwise have nowhere to call home.

Thank you for agreeing to receive this newsletter and for your desire to work with us. We hope you enjoy reading our first edition!

Our news

Our next online event with former hostage, Terry Waite CBE
Join us for our next online event on Thursday 11 March at 7pm with bestselling author, humanitarian, and President of Emmaus UK, Terry Waite CBE, in conversation with Cathy Rentzenbrink.

In 1987, as the Church of England’s special envoy, Terry went to Beirut to negotiate the release of a broadcast journalist who had been kidnapped by jihadi terrorists. Terry was taken hostage as well and held in solitary confinement for almost five years before both men were released in 1991, 30 years ago this November.

During our event, Terry will be discussing his own experiences of captivity in the context of recent national and global lockdowns as well as his versatility as an author, and the organisations he supports in a live Q&A. Tickets are £10.

Support us

Emmaus Cornwall’s clear and priority aim is to create a community within the county which provides a home and work for as many homeless people as we can.

To realise our plans we will need to raise over £1million to either buy or build a suitable property with an adequate amount of land. Whilst this is a substantial sum, we have developed a fundraising strategy which we believe demonstrates that this target is achievable.

In addition to individual donations large and small, we will be seeking grants from statutory funders and trusts and foundations as well as establishing partnerships with local companies and businesses. We will be staging events (online for now!) and encouraging everyone in the wider community to fundraise for and with us. If you would like to make a one-off or monthly donation to us, please visit our website.

It's not all about money though. We also need help from willing and committed volunteers. If you would like to get involved, please check our available roles.

As this newsletter is a new venture, we welcome feedback on style and content and if you would like to contribute stories or articles for inclusion in future editions, please get in touch.

We hope you will support us in any way you can and that you will encourage others to do the same. Please share this newsletter with anyone else who may be interested in being part of the Emmaus Cornwall journey and encourage them to subscribe
