Emmaus Colchester supports formerly homeless people by giving them a home, meaningful work in a social enterprise and an opportunity to get themselves back on their feet again.
For many people who experience homelessness, one of the biggest obstacles they must overcome is a loss of self-esteem. At Emmaus Colchester, we provide an opportunity to regain this, with a chance to make a real contribution to the community.
Rather than providing hostels, the Emmaus model is based on providing a home for as long as someone needs it, with support and stability within a safe environment where they can settle and re-build their lives. During this time, our companions can benefit from the opportunity to overcome issues such as addiction, get support with mental health issues or rebuild relationships with estranged family.
Our companions are also provided with meaningful work in our social enterprise – you’ll find them in our shops, cafe and warehouse, or collecting and delivering furniture, or in our transport office. All the revenue generated goes towards keeping the community going.
Do you have an affinity with supporting those who have previously experienced homelessness?
