Our Catering Manager, Darren, talks us through the new menu in Joan’s Coffee Shop, which now includes some tasty new additions suggested by our customers.
We are very fortunate at Joan’s Coffee Shop to have a large following of lovely loyal customers. A lot of them come to support our charity and to browse our vast shop full of bargains. The perfect accompaniment to this is to grab a bite to eat, along with a cup of tea or freshly ground coffee.
I am now in my second year at Emmaus. On arriving it was easy to see why we are such a popular destination. With a focus on value alongside quality, our brunches are what many come to Joan’s to enjoy! These include The Emmaus Brunch, The impressive Big Brunch! and the Vegetarian and Vegan counterparts, alongside baps, muffins and various items of toast!
We offer an impressive counter with at least 10 different varieties of freshly made cakes per week; everything from the much-loved carrot cake and walnut cake, chocolate caramel to Biscoff, and not forgetting our traditional Victoria sponge, to name just a few. We have a cake for every taste and always have gluten free and vegan options too.
Last year we decided to develop our lunch menu, so we conducted a customer survey to find out what customers wanted to see featured. We experimented with their suggestions through our ‘Specials Board’ and soon had some great recommendations
One of the additions is our delicious pie selection; we’ve had a venison pie, a lamb and mint pie and minced beef and onion pie, all of which have been well received.
The pie of the day includes a meat pie, a vegetarian and sometimes a vegan pie!
Another favourite was beef chilli which we’d initially tried out on our Specials Board. We make a mild and tasty chilli, but my colleague Dylan makes our very own homemade chilli sauce which adds a kick, for those who like it hot!
Another new arrival to the menu is a fishfinger sandwich, with beef pasties being a popular choice with our customers too.
We prepare freshly made sandwiches, toasted sandwiches and paninis which have always been big sellers.
We have a kids’ menu which is appreciated by the young ones, and we also do themed menus for key dates in the calendar; for example for Valentine’s Day, we offered sharing boards and afternoon teas, whilst for Burn’s Night we created a range of Scottish dishes. A pirate-themed Half-Term menu proved to be a hit with the children, and more recently, for British Pie Week, we celebrated with a variety of flavoursome pies all of which received compliments too.
Our popular staples on our lunch menu are still available, like our homemade soup which is nearly always gluten and dairy free. We also have warming jacket potatoes and the classic favourite, ham, egg and chips.
Joan’s Coffee Shop is named after our beloved long-time companion, Joan, who spent many years catering for our customers.
Originally serving teas and coffees from a plug-in urn on a humble cart, Joan’s has now grown into the vibrant café that it is today, offering freshly prepared hot food, seasonal specials and a smorgasbord of cakes to suit every palate.
Joan’s commitment was always to provide good quality service with a warm welcome and we strive to continue her incredible legacy to this day – come in and experience Joan’s magic!
Our opening hours are slightly shorter than our shop as we’re open from 10am until 3pm from Wednesday to Sunday, with brunch served from 10am to 12.30pm and lunch served from 12.30pm to 3pm. Look forward to welcoming you soon!
