Today is World Homeless Day, a global reminder to recognise the needs of people experiencing homelessness and to celebrate the work being done in communities to create real, lasting change.

At Sussex Emmaus, we’re proud to be part of that effort. Over the past year, our community has made a meaningful difference by:

  • Providing a home, food, support, and work opportunities for 58 people
  • Welcoming 18 new companions into our community
  • Delivering 90 training courses to companions
  • Providing 624 hours of counselling
  • Supporting 27 companions with funding for training and development
  • Helping 33 local families with essential furniture and goods

At Emmaus, we believe that overcoming homelessness is about more than a roof over your head, it’s about rebuilding self-worth, purpose, and connection.

For many people who’ve experienced homelessness, isolation and loss of confidence can be just as damaging as losing a home. That’s why Emmaus offers more than a temporary fix. We provide a stable home within a supportive community, giving people the time and space to heal, learn, and rebuild their lives.

In our Sussex community, companions (as we call our residents) are supported to address personal challenges, reconnect with loved ones, and work towards a brighter future.

What makes Emmaus unique is our model of solidarity and shared purpose. Companions contribute to the running of our social enterprises, from shops to workshops, which help to fund the community. In return, they receive accommodation, meals, and tailored support. More importantly, they regain pride and purpose, knowing their work directly supports both themselves and others.

One companion shared:

“Emmaus has provided the stability and support to enable me to get things back on an even keel and rebuild my life to a degree that gives me the confidence to move back to an independent life. The high degree of empathy and support has been a major contributing factor.”

This World Homeless Day, we invite you to stand with us, to help ensure more people have the chance to rebuild their lives and find hope again.

See how you can help

Together, we can continue to change lives.
