CLOSING DATE: Ongoing LOCATION: Emmaus Bolton TYPE: Voluntary

Do you care about homelessness in Bolton? Have you got expertise and experience in healthcare, law or retail? We are looking for new charity trustees to join our team here at Emmaus Bolton. If you have time to spare and want to help a homelessness charity, then we would like to hear from you.

The Emmaus Bolton community is a hive of activity off Fletcher Street. We run several different social businesses from Derby Barracks, where formerly homeless people live and work to raise funds to support themselves and help others in need. As well as our secondhand shop we sell brand new budget goods, make and paint bespoke woodwork to order, run an onsite café and garden centre, and repurpose goods of all kinds. Our Scrap Store sells art and crafts materials derived from donations stripped down in our Recycling Centre and we serve hundreds of Bolton families with affordable food through our social supermarket, Lucie’s Pantry.

Our current board of trustees has many years’ experience of governance and possesses a diverse range of skills. There are, however, gaps in the legal, medical and retail areas and we are keen to recruit trustees who will fill these.

The main duties are to:

  • Provide professional advice and support
  • Attend and contribute at trustee meetings
  • Read board papers and accompanying documents
  • Suggest practical ideas to meet challenges and opportunities
  • Work collaboratively with fellow trustees.

We are looking in particular for trustees who can commit to volunteering one day per month at the Derby Barracks.

Ideally they will have:

  • Awareness of charity and/or social enterprise governance
  • Experience of organisation development
  • Knowledge of the communities within Bolton

However, being good with people and at teamwork and possessing a highly motivated, enthusiastic and a positive, can-do attitude are more important because there will be a full induction and training period through which an existing trustee will provide support.

Trustees meet alternatively in sub-groups and all together in a cycle that averages about six, meetings a year, usually in the early evening.
