Emmaus Bolton has teamed up with a leading litter and waste-reduction charity to show the benefits of shopping second-hand during Buy Nothing New Month (January 1 to 31).

The team from Keep Britain Tidy visited our preloved shops and services to film furniture being upcycled and look around our shops and services – interviewing our CEO Tony in the process.

Each year Emmaus Bolton reuses thousands of tonnes of donated items that might otherwise have ended up in landfill. These are reused on-site to give them a new lease of life in the charity’s shops, all off Fletcher Street.

Every item sold helps raise the vital funding needed to sustain the charity’s home and support for up to 22 people with experience of homelessness – making a difference for people and the planet.

Tony said: “Emmaus Bolton is excited to team up with Keep Britain Tidy to show the benefits of shopping preloved.

“Furniture and other items we reuse in our charity shops not only reduce waste, they raise the vital income needed by Emmaus Bolton to provide a home, support and opportunities for people with experience of homelessness.”

Emmaus Bolton is more than a roof. The charity is a safe, welcoming community where people are seen for who they are, supported as they rebuild their lives, and empowered to shape a brighter future for themselves.

Keep Britain Tidy filmed the social enterprises at Emmaus Bolton, including our textile workshops, Scrap Store of recycled arts and crafts supplies, wood workshop and upcycling service.

Nathalie Depledge, Campaign Manager at Keep Britain Tidy, said: “We were incredibly inspired to hear about Emmaus’s work and feel the companions’ work selling and repairing preloved goods and saving them from landfill fits in brilliantly with the aims of Buy Nothing New Month.”

Buy Nothing New Month (January 1 to 31) is a Keep Britain Tidy campaign encouraging people to protect the planet by avoiding buying new products.

During this month, participants receive weekly newsletters signposting more environmentally friendly options, such as repairing, refurbishing, upcycling and buying second hand or donating items no longer needed instead of throwing them away.

Nathalie from Keep Britain Tidy added: “The main message we want to get across is that there are great alternatives to buying new – like supporting Emmaus – which helps provide affordable furniture, works towards ending homelessness, and is good for the environment too.”
