I have been volunteering at Emmaus since 2002 when I retired from teaching during the pandemic. I came to find social interaction and a way of being useful. I had heard about Emmaus on an Open University course. I think I must have been attracted to the Bolton branch by an advert I had seen.

At present I volunteer in the ice cream parlour which is an adjunct to the highly successful and well-established café managed and run by the companions (people supported by the charity). I love meeting the customers and watching them bond with all the delicious ‘Mrs Dowsons’ flavours.

I serve the ice cream in a friendly and cheerful way, encouraging the visitors to add a bit of joy to their day. I keep the area clean and hygienic, and replenish the tubs, as and when required. All flavours are popular judging by the speed with which the tubs disappear!!

Volunteering in the ice cream parlour at Emmaus Bolton

Charity ice cream parlour is win-win

I think an ice cream parlour where the profits are ploughed back into Emmaus is a win-win. The customers can enjoy a little peace and relaxation in the cafe or little green oasis at the back and at the same time help Emmaus to carry on.

Previously, I helped in the Scrap Store where volunteers and companions process donated crafting items such as fabric, wool and sewing materials. It is an inspiring and attractive place, much appreciated by its customers and staff. I know I personally have been much inspired to try my own new crafting projects. I have made a waistcoat from a pattern in the shop for one of my fellow volunteers and a dress from scrap material I found, but the recycling volunteers at Emmaus Bolton are the real experts!

I enjoy working side by side with the companions. I have witnessed first-hand their efforts and commitment in support of the charity. They have often helped me when I am short of a pen or in a muddle with the till.

Volunteering is good for the soul

Volunteering is definitely good for the soul. Sometimes all the bad news that comes at us from social media can be overwhelming and instil a sense of despair. Volunteering is an effective way of combating this by making small practical differences leading to change for the better.

Volunteering in an ice cream parlour is a good way of contributing, especially if you enjoy meeting the public and spreading a little enjoyment.

I would encourage anyone to volunteer at Emmaus. They will be warmly welcomed by the staff, companions and volunteers and soon feel part of the many ongoing projects that are making a real difference in people’s lives.
