A brand-new recycling centre has been delivered and installed in the grounds of Emmaus Bolton.

Three converted shipping containers have been delivered and craned into place at our Derby Barracks site. The shipping containers have been joined together and will form the main hub for Emmaus Bolton’s new Recycling Centre.

Tony Stephenson, Director of Emmaus Bolton, said: “It was brilliant to see these pre-fabricated former shipping containers arrive on site and join together so quickly. They’ll enable us to expand our recycling operations which will include sorting, processing and redistribution of donated textiles and clean waste from local manufacturers.”

“Thanks to funding from Emmaus UK and Bolton’s Fund, we’ve been able to bring our Recycling Centre to life. Our aim is to support waste reduction efforts in our area whilst providing a broader mix of work experience and training opportunities to the people we support.”

Emmaus Bolton supports a community of formerly homeless people by offering a stable home, work experience and daily support for as long as they need it. Whilst at Emmaus, people gain skills, confidence and experience by working together with local volunteers in the charity’s social enterprise.

Scrap Shack opening soon

Next month we will open a new Scrap Shack resource centre to the public. This latest outlet as part of our Derby Barracks charity superstore will stock a wide range of reclaimed art, craft and textile supplies. All of the income generated from the centre will go back into supporting people affected by homelessness and individuals struggling to afford food and household essentials.

Emmaus Bolton is part of a growing network of scrap stores and creative reuse centres across the UK. These centres make use of clean, reusable scrap materials which businesses find hard to recycle so would otherwise be sent to landfill. The materials are processed and made available to individuals, groups, schools and artisans for a wide range of creative uses.

We are appealing to manufacturers in the Bolton area for clean, dry waste that may be of use to others. The charity is also recruiting local volunteers to lend a hand and help out in the Recycling Centre or Scrap Shack.
