Emmaus Bolton has created a growing collection of homelessness lesson plans, classroom activities, presentations and teaching resources for schools.

These free PSHE and Citizenship teaching resources help pupils explore what homelessness really means, challenge stereotypes and myths, and understand the vital role of charities in local communities today.

This is the start of an ongoing series of lesson plans on important issues affecting our society, designed for schools in Bolton and beyond. Each resource is curriculum-linked with a range of assessment opportunities. These activities are designed to help schools engage young people with their local communities and learn more about the many different ways we can all take action.

Why Teach About Homelessness in Schools?

Homelessness is an important issue in the UK. By educating your pupils about homelessness, families and carers will be better equipped to know what we can do to help – and get help.

These resources can be used in homelessness assemblies, PSHE lessons, Citizenship projects, and English writing activities. The activities give children and young people the chance to think critically, communicate respectfully and reflect on social responsibility.

Curriculum Links for PSHE, Citizenship and English

Our homelessness lesson plans and resources link directly to the curriculum:

  • PSHE – Understanding wellbeing, empathy, stereotypes and resilience.
  • Citizenship – The role of government, councils and charities in tackling homelessness.
  • English – Opportunities for debates, presentations, reflective writing and persuasive writing activities.
  • SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development) – Challenging prejudice, recognising diversity and encouraging social action.

The activity plans and resources can be adapted for KS1, KS2, KS3 and KS4 and your pupils’ needs.

About Us

Emmaus Bolton is a charity providing a home and support for up to 22 people with experience of homelessness.

We are one of 29 Emmaus charities in the UK, stretching from Glasgow to Dover. Every Emmaus is unique, providing different range of services and shops that respond to the needs of each local community.

What sets Emmaus apart from homeless hostels and other homeless charities is that people supported by the charity participate in the charity’s different social enterprises. These activities help people develop skills, gain experience and rebuild towards moving back into everyday living.
