This opportunity, to become part of a community and make a contribution to it, plays an important role in restoring self-esteem and helping companions to find a way to overcome homelessness in the long term.
Emmaus SLC supports up to 45 people who have experienced homelessness. It is one of 30 Emmaus communities across the country, supporting more than 850 people who have experienced homelessness in the UK.
Residents, who are known as ‘companions’, receive not just a bed, but also volunteering opportunities within communities, which can be crucial to rebuilding self-confidence and feeling able to give something back. The money generated from Emmaus charity shops all goes into the upkeep of communities and support for companions. Our shops provide our companions with voluntary work, to help gain vital experience to get back on their feet.
Emmaus doesn’t just make a difference to people’s lives, it also helps save the environment, by recycling and reusing as much as possible. Last year, Emmaus saved more than 3,000 tonnes of used items from going to landfill.
Emmaus charity shops sell preloved clothes and accessories, giving them a new lease of life. Many of the social enterprises upcycle furniture to re-sell in their shops. Others provide recycling facilities or turn old fabrics into brand new items. Not only does this stop items going to landfill, it provides crucial funds to help sustain communities.
