Selwyn Image, the founder of Emmaus in the UK, has spent the past 30 years of his life volunteering for Emmaus. He created the first community at Cambridge and was then instrumental in the creation of Emmaus UK before going on to support the start-up and development of numerous communities including Greenwich, Oxford, Leicestershire & Rutland and most recently, Norfolk & Waveney. His wife, Jane Image was also involved from the very start and has made her own significant contribution to Emmaus.
Selwyn has always been keen to ensure that those people who have volunteered their time for Emmaus should be recognised for their efforts. In this, the 30th year of Emmaus in the UK, Selwyn and Jane have commissioned a Founders’ Medal to be awarded to those volunteers who have made an outstanding contribution to the development of Emmaus.
The award will be made to those volunteers who have made an outstanding contribution during the past 30 years irrespective of whether they are still actively engaged with the Emmaus movement or not. This includes:

George Almond DL
A founder member of Emmaus Bolton who has only recently stood down as a trustee having served since 2000. More recently he has been an active founder member of the board of the Emmaus North Staffordshire group. He has also been the Chair of the Emmaus North-West partnership and played an active part in its development.
Roger Speare MBE
The founder of Emmaus Bolton in 2000 and Chair until he stepped down recently. He also founded the North Staffordshire and South Manchester groups.
A founder member of Emmaus Greenwich in 1997 and continuous service as a trustee until stepping down in 2020.
A founder trustee of Emmaus Leeds in 1999 and still a member of the board.
Joined the board of Emmaus Mossley in 1999 and served for six years as Chair. Currently, the Chair and founder member of Emmaus South Manchester. A member of the Operations Committee of Emmaus UK and an active member of the Emmaus North-West partnership.
A founder member at Emmaus Glasgow and continuous service as a trustee ever since, he is still a member of the board.
