Selwyn Image, the founder of Emmaus in the UK, has spent the past 30 years of his life volunteering for Emmaus. He created the first community at Cambridge and was then instrumental in the creation of Emmaus UK before going on to support the start-up and development of numerous communities including Greenwich, Oxford, Leicestershire & Rutland and most recently, Norfolk & Waveney. His wife, Jane Image was also involved from the very start and has made her own significant contribution to Emmaus.
Selwyn has always been keen to ensure that those people who have volunteered their time for Emmaus should be recognised for their efforts. In this, the 30th year of Emmaus in the UK, Selwyn and Jane have commissioned a Founders’ Medal to be awarded to those volunteers who have made an outstanding contribution to the development of Emmaus.
The award will be made to those volunteers who have made an outstanding contribution during the past 30 years irrespective of whether they are still actively engaged with the Emmaus movement or not. This includes:
- The founding of a full member Emmaus community dedicated to the ideals of the Emmaus Movement regarding its purpose and function.
- At least 20 years of voluntary service to Emmaus.
To celebrate our 30th year, inaugural awards have been made to:
George Almond DL
A founder member of Emmaus Bolton who has only recently stood down as a trustee having served since 2000. More recently he has been an active founder member of the board of the Emmaus North Staffordshire group. He has also been the Chair of the Emmaus North-West partnership and played an active part in its development.
Roger Speare MBE
The founder of Emmaus Bolton in 2000 and Chair until he stepped down recently. He also founded the North Staffordshire and South Manchester groups.
Beryl Fussey
A founder member of Emmaus Greenwich in 1997 and continuous service as a trustee until stepping down in 2020.
Amanda Beresford
A founder trustee of Emmaus Leeds in 1999 and still a member of the board.
Frances Hirst
Joined the board of Emmaus Mossley in 1999 and served for six years as Chair. Currently, the Chair and founder member of Emmaus South Manchester. A member of the Operations Committee of Emmaus UK and an active member of the Emmaus North-West partnership.
Ernie Hasler
A founder member at Emmaus Glasgow and continuous service as a trustee ever since, he is still a member of the board.
John Noble
A trustee and Chair at Emmaus Gloucester from 2002 to 2009, trustee at Emmaus Preston from 2009 to 2014, trustee at Emmaus South Wales from 2010 to 2021, trustee at Emmaus UK from 2006 to 2012 including being Vice-Chair and Chair.
Richard Darlington
Founder member at Emmaus Cambridge, Founder of Emmaus Mossley in 1996 and Chair until 2004.
Iain Mackechnie-Jarvis
A founder member of Emmaus Cambridge and Emmaus UK. Trustee at Emmaus Greenwich from 1997 to 2004 and Chair of Emmaus Norfolk & Waveney from 2013 to 2019.
Alison Thompson
Founder of Emmaus Hampshire in 1999 and Chair until 2013. Trustee of Emmaus UK from 2011 to 2016.
Martin Davies
A founder member of Emmaus Sheffield in 2000 and Chair until present day. Trustee of Emmaus UK from 2002 to 2010 including a period as Chair.
Patrick & Janet Doyle
Founder members of Emmaus Hull & East Riding and trustees from 2007 to 2018.
Don Simpson
A founder member of Emmaus Mossley and trustee until 2017 including several years as Chair, trustee at Emmaus Salford from 2008 to 2020, trustee of Emmaus Preston from 2009 to 2013, three separate spells as a trustee of Emmaus UK and secretary of the Emmaus North-West partnership.
Peter Pike
A founder member of Emmaus Burnley and Chair from 2007 to 2014.
Tim Brooke
Founder of Emmaus Coventry and still a current board member, he spent many years as Chair.
Keith & Kath Lawson-West
Founders of Emmaus Leicestershire & Rutland in 2011 and trustees until 2014.
David Cooper
A founder member of Emmaus Hastings in 2008 and Chair until present day. Trustee of Emmaus UK from 2012 to 2020.
Don Pinchbeck
A founder member of Emmaus North-East in 2009 and still a trustee. Trustee of Emmaus UK from 2009 to 2014.
Ann Thorne
A member of the North-West partnership which founded Emmaus Bolton, Emmaus Preston, Emmaus Salford, Emmaus Merseyside and Emmaus South Manchester.
