Cherie Booth QC visits Emmaus Community

The barrister and wife of the Prime Minister visited Emmaus Brighton and Hove on Wednesday, 14th March to meet residents and staff. Cherie Booth QC has been a supporter of Emmaus for some time, but this was her first visit to one of the 13 Communities around the UK.

Nick Miller, one of the forty Companions (those who live and work at Emmaus) showed Ms Booth around the Community, including the "Second Hand Superstore", the largest charity shop in the South East of England.

Emmaus Brighton and Hove is a working Community for men and women, the majority of whom have been long-term homeless and unemployed. Since opening in 1997 it has provided a home, work and an opportunity to rediscover dignity and self-worth to over 300 people.

The Community operates a recycling and re-use business, selling donated furniture, electrical goods and bric-a-brac, and runs an on-site café and garden centre. The work provides an opportunity for residents to rebuild confidence, develop skills, and support themselves and others.

The shops and café are open Tuesday-Saturday, 10am-5pm.
