Emmaus Leeds photo wins regional heat
This photo of Lenny, a Companion at Emmaus Leeds, won the regional heat of a national photography competition. The photo was taken by Stephen McNiven, a volunteer at Emmaus Leeds.
Organisers of the competition, the Social Enterprise Coalition, were seeking photos which showed how social enterprises transform lives.
At Emmaus Communities, previously homeless residents refurbish items donated by the public to sell in the Community shop. Lenny's skills have been put to good use refurbishing old bicycles in the Community workshop. Stephen's photograph captures the moment when Lenny 'road tested' one of his finished projects.
Emmaus Leeds Community Manager Ali Ward said: “I think it’s brilliant because the photo encompasses all of us: a volunteer took the picture of a Companion, and a staff member, me, suggested we enter the competition. It brings together all three parts of Emmaus and shows the different sides to what we do.”
Jonathan Bland, Chief Executive of the Social Enterprise Coalition, said “There were a number of exceptional entries, and we congratulate Emmaus Leeds for winning their regional competition.”
The national prize was won by Upstream, a social enterprise in Devon which works to to reduce rural isolation for older people.
