510 double-deckers a year!
World Environment Day is celebrated each year on 5th June and this year’s slogan is Kick the Habit! Towards a Low Carbon Economy. Emmaus projects share the UN’s vision of a low carbon future - and are taking steps to make it a reality.
Through their recycling businesses, Emmaus Communities divert waste from landfill and provide an alternative to the need for people to constantly buy newly-manufactured items. In 2007, one Community reused or recycled 273 tonnes of goods - that’s the weight of 34 double-decker buses!
Emmaus Hampshire’s new Community will have a green roof, planted with Sedum, and will be an example of sustainable living when it opens in 2009 to provide a home and work for 22 formerly homeless men and women.
Meanwhile Emmaus Mossley is working to minimise their gas and electricity consumption and increase their use of solar energy, whilst Emmaus Village Carlton have launched their exciting ‘Under One Roof’ project, designed to improve the efficiency of their recycling and reuse processes.
