Former Social Exclusion Minister joins Emmaus

Hilary Armstrong, MP for North West Durham, has joined Emmaus UK as a Trustee.

Following her responsibilities as Local Government and Housing Minister, Hilary held the post of Minister for Social Exclusion until June 2007.

She chose to become involved in Emmaus because she believes it’s an organisation that works to develop the potential strengths of individuals. “I’ve become involved with several charities but there is a theme running through my involvement which Emmaus is at the heart of. I have always been interested in organisations that value and understand the integrity of the person.”

Hilary Armstrong feels that what sets Emmaus apart from other homelessness services is the fact that Companions are able to work to support themselves and others.

"We are none of us human unless we are both receiving and giving and if we put people in the position where all they can do is be dependent on hand-outs we will not be helping them," she says.

As a member of the Emmaus UK Federation Board of Trustees, Hilary will work alongside fellow Board Members whose role is to manage the progress of Emmaus in the UK.
