Tea and turf in Hampshire
An informal and fun turf-cutting ceremony was held at Emmaus Hampshire’s Bar End site in Winchester on 28th March to mark the start of construction of the first Emmaus Community in the county. The Builders - Amiri Construction Ltd - moved onto the site at the beginning of March and have made rapid progress levelling the site and preparing it for the erection of the Emmaus Hampshire "Green Roof" project.
Alison Thompson, Chair of Emmaus Hampshire, welcomed all to the event. Guests included the Mayor of Winchester, Cllr Chris Pines, Cllr Felicity Hindson representing the leader of Hampshire County Council and Cllr George Becket, Leader of the City Council. A symbolic piece of turf was cut by Edward Murray - a local man who has known homelessness at first hand.
The official "tea and turf" cake - beautifully decorated by Alison - was then cut by Cllr Pines and enjoyed with piping hot mugs of Fairtrade tea donated by a local supporter.
A fantastic way to spend a Friday afternoon!
