Founder of Emmaus UK receives his CBE.
Selwyn Image, Vice President of the Emmaus UK Federation, travelled to Buckingham Palace on 4th March to receive his CBE from the Queen. He was awarded the CBE in the New Year’s Honours List in recognition of his key role in bringing Emmaus to the UK.
The first Emmaus Community in the UK, Cambridge, opened its doors to Companions in 1992. Selwyn then went on to help establish 6 other Emmaus Communities and is still very much involved with the work of the Emmaus Federation.
On her visit to Cambridge in 1993, the Queen was presented with a bike for her grandchildren, refurbished by Companions at Emmaus Cambridge. When they spoke at the CBE ceremony earlier this week, Selwyn asked her if she recollected the occasion and reminded her that her husband had expressed doubt that the Emmaus approach would work. The Queen’s response was good humoured: “Well, we don’t always get it right!”
Today, thanks to the dedication and belief of people like Selwyn, there are 15 Emmaus Communities,12 Emmaus Groups and 11 emerging Groups across the UK.
