Welcome to Emmaus Ipswich

Emmaus Ipswich is working to set up an Emmaus Community in the Ipswich area.

We have evidence that 400 homeless people in Ipswich asked the Council for accommodation last year. Monthly figures vary: 42 in September 2009 and 27 in February 2010. This was probably only the tip of the iceberg and many more are sleeping rough, in tents, in empty buildings or on friends' sofas.

We aim to set up a full community providing home and work for homeless people but will start a social enterprise business first repairing and selling furniture. We are not ready to receive furniture at present but hope to be soon.

There are no handouts in Emmaus

Emmaus Companions sign off unemployment benefits and work full time on the Community business. In return they receive accommodation, food and clothing as well as a weekly allowance. In this way people can move from dependency to supporting themselves and the community.
