Emmaus Gloucestershire is home to 22 Companions. We tackle the problems of homelessness by offering people a home, work and a sense of belonging. Companions, as residents are called, regain dignity, build self-esteem and learn skills through living together and working on the Community's reuse business and solidarity projects.

The Community Home was opened in 2001, having purchased and renovated a former nurses’ home with grants from Emmaus UK and other donors, and was home to 16 Companions. Each individual has his or her own room, with shared bathrooms, communal dining and living rooms. We have a large fenced-in garden with a patio area. In 2006/07 we converted two staff apartments to form seven new bedrooms which have enabled us to increase the number of Companions to 22. We also renovated all the bathrooms and redecorated the house. This work was self-financed by funds generated from our social enterprise activities.

Our business activities include a Secondhand Superstore in Gloucester, and charity shops in Nailsworth and Cheltenham. We run two vans that collect donated furniture and white goods from Gloucester, Cheltenham, and the surrounding areas.

With the support of the general public for donations and purchasing secondhand goods, we continue to work towards self-sufficiency and helping others in need.
